If you’re interested in history and mystery, the Alligator Effigy Mound may be the place for you. This interesting land feature has been listen in the National Register of Historic Places since 1971. While locals refer to it as the “alligator”, no one really knows who built it and what it actually represents. This giant earthen structure appears as a four-footed animal with a head and long tail. While no one knows exactly when and why it was built, archeologists estimate it was constructed over 1,000 years ago, likely by indigenous peoples, and used for sacrifices. Brad Lepper, an archeologist, believes the creature may actually be the underwater panther, which is one of the most significant water beings in Native American myths.
